Introducing the GPL Toolkit for FreePBX and Incredible PBX
We’ve been scratching our head for a good way to commemorate Micro$oft’s $7.5 billion purchase of GitHub which has served as the linchpin of the open source development community for many years. We’ll leave it to others and history to judge whether this was a good idea or not. What we came up with was a GPL Toolkit for Incredible PBX 13-13 that makes it child’s play to upgrade FreePBX® GPL modules in our Incredible PBX® 13-13 offerings for CentOS/SL,… Read More ›

The Triple Crown: Google Voice Returns on All Platforms
If you’ve been enjoying this summer’s wild roller coaster ride on the Google Voice train, then your worst nightmare is almost over… until the next time. What we all hopefully learned from Google’s cavalier sledgehammer-approach to telephony is DON’T DEPEND ON GOOGLE. Enjoy the free ride once again but make some alternative arrangements for the next time Google gets a harebrained idea as stupid as this one. Google’s idea of an "open platform" is proprietary everything even down to the… Read More ›

Setting Up a Google Voice Hosting Platform in the Cloud
Google Voice has some similarities with opioid addiction. Once you get hooked on free calling in the U.S. and Canada, it’s hard to give it up. When Google torpedoed Google Chat and XMPP connectivity to Google Voice, they left millions of users in the lurch. All of those using packaged versions of Asterisk® including VitalPBX, Elastix, Issabel, Wazo, AsteriskNOW®, and FreePBX® Distro woke up to crickets from their Google Voice trunks. The fallback to the Simonics GV-SIP Gateway also failed.… Read More ›

A New Day: Google Voice GVSIP Now Available for FreePBX
If you’ve been following along this past month as we rolled out a new SIP-based Google Voice implementation for Asterisk®, then you’ve gotten a first-hand look at how sausage is made. If you prefer free calling in the U.S. and Canada, then it was worth the effort. Today, we put the finishing touches on the new GVSIP-NAF implementation by introducing a version specifically tailored for those using FreePBX®. That, of course, includes the CentOS 6, Ubuntu 18, and Raspbian 8… Read More ›

Happy Days: Google Voice GVSIP No Longer a One Trunk Pony
July 20 NEWS FLASH: This article has been superseded. Google now has discontinued support of their XMPP interface to Google Voice so the latest CentOS/SL versions of Incredible PBX 13-13 (including the Incredible PBX ISO) now incorporate NAF’s GVSIP interface to Google Voice. You can read all about it here. What has changed is you now add unlimited Google Voice trunks from the command line by running /root/gvsip-naf/install-gvsip. You can delete trunks by running /root/gvsip-naf/del-trunk. Once one or more trunks… Read More ›

Letís Celebrate: Google Voice GVSIP Comes to Raspberry Pi
We introduced NAF’s new GVSIP implementation of Google Voice for CentOS 6 and Incredible PBX® 13-13 last week, and today we again have something to celebrate for those in the United States that enjoy free calling. We’re pleased to introduce the GVSIP-NAF add-on for Incredible PBX for the Raspberry Pi 3. You can upgrade any current platform, or you can install a fresh image from here that already includes the GVSIP upgrade. The upgrade procedure takes about 45 minutes, and… Read More ›

A New Beginning: Google Voice Joins the Asterisk PJSIP Club
We weren’t sure we would ever be writing this column. And, if it weren’t for @NAF of DSL Reports fame, it might very well have been years before a SIP-compatible version of Google Voice was available for Asterisk®. We really can’t overstate the scope and enormity of his accomplishment. If you look at NAF’s code additions to Asterisk, you’ll understand why. We would hasten to add that Bill Simon of Simonics was the pioneer in getting Google’s code to work… Read More ›

One Minute Cloud VPS: Meet Incredible PBX for HiFormance
Part of the challenge of deploying an Asterisk®-based server on a cloud platform is getting all of 1,000+ pieces in place without a hiccup during the installation. Particularly for first-time users of a VoIP platform, this can be problematic. HiFormance is one of our favorite low-cost cloud providers, and today they’re introducing something that no other cloud provider offers: a configured Incredible PBX 13-13 VPS that’s ready to accept calls in under a minute. We’ve been inching toward a new… Read More ›

VoIP 101: Developing a Cost-Effective SIP Strategy
In the lead up to the demise of Google Voice XMPP service next week, we wanted to offer what we have found to be a cost-effective SIP strategy which takes advantage of the best of all worlds. We would divide SIP offerings into five broad categories: business-class unlimited SIP trunks, Old Faithful SIP providers, Mom-and-Pop SIP services, dirt-cheap termination services, and Gee Whiz SIP providers. As we have said many times, the beauty of setting up an Asterisk® PBX such… Read More ›

VoIPís Dirty Little Secret: Why ĎUnlimitedí SIP Trunks Are a Very Bad Deal
The snazzy ads and free sign-up offers make so-called Unlimited SIP Trunks sound appealing. Let’s take a careful look at what a service such as SIPStationô would actually provide and compare prices with what’s offered by providers such as Vitelity. Vitelity’s rates are competitive with those offered by many SIP providers as detailed in this PIAF Forum thread. Full Disclosure: Vitelity is a Platinum Sponsor of Nerd Vittlesô and our open source projects including Incredible PBX®. We also happen to… Read More ›

Summer Surprise: Itís Incredible PBX 13-13 for Ubuntu 18.04
Our last major Incredible PBX® upgrade on the Ubuntu platform supported Ubuntu 14.04 which was released in April, 2014. We skipped 16.04 because of all the wrinkles it introduced for VoIP deployments: an incompatible PHP upgrade, missing ODBC support, and on and on. Fortunately, all of those issues have been sorted out over the past two years, and two weeks ago we introduced Incredible PBX 13-13 for the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS platform which was released in April. Now we’ve added… Read More ›

Some Fresh CallerID Magic for Incredible PBX 13-13
It’s been more than 10 years since we first introduced CallerID Trifecta for Asterisk® and the FreePBX® platform. A few months later it morphed into CallerID Superfecta and, as they say, the rest is history. Today CallerID Superfecta is used by over a million people around the globe to obtain CallerID Name (CNAM) information from over 70 different lookup sources. WOW! Just call me the Proud Papa. Creating an OBi200 Google Voice Trunk to Use with Asterisk
Since Asterisk® will no longer be able to "talk" to Google Voice after June 17, we promised to hold our nose and document how to salvage your Google Voice trunks. Our exercise for today is to show you how to deploy an OBi 200-series device which can speak the new Google Voice language and use it as a traditional SIP bridge between Google Voice’s proprietary SIP platform and your Asterisk server. We will skip the editorializing on why Google is… Read More ›

An Open Letter to Google: Donít Do It!
With an obscure post on its support forum, Google has quietly announced that it will discontinue Google Voice support for XMPP on June 18. According to Obihai1 insiders, it will be replaced with a Google-proprietary version of the SIP protocol to which only Obihai has been provided access despite claims from Google staff (without documentation) that the "new Google Voice" will be "standards-compliant" and "should work with many third party solutions." July 20 Update: Google did it anyway and pulled… Read More ›

This thread on DSL Reports claims to have the latest information. Regardless of what happens in June, now is an excellent time to develop a backup plan… Read More ›

Autonomous Cars: Move Over Tesla, Here Comes Everybody
It’s been about a year since our last Teslaģ report card. And, wow, how the landscape has changed. For most of the year, Tesla has stumbled and bumbled through about a dozen updates. With each one, Tesla’s resident cheerleader, Electrek, has proclaimed that self-driving autonomy was "just around the corner."
